Coating

Can ionbond PVD coatings be applied on top of other coatings?

The only finish that I reccommend coating over is hard chrome. I have seen this work with great success. We can also coat the exterior of barrels after Melonite treatment.

Can the internal parts be coated without any effect on the trigger pull?

I can't guarantee that the pull weight will not be affected. If it does in fact change the feel of the trigger it will be minimal.

When a barrel is coated does that include the bore and chamber?

No. Special precautions are made to keep the coatings from entering these areas.

What is the turnaround time for Ionbond coating?

It varies based on the type of job, quantities, type of coating required etc. As a general rule, most DLC (black) coating jobs will be turned around in 4-6 weeks. Other coatings (silver, gold, FDE) normally take a bit longer. Call or email for more information.

Can a slide be finished matte on the rounds and polished on the flats?

Yes. The coatings are very thin and will reflect the finish of the metal very well. Polishing is charged an extra $60 per hour if requested.

I am sending in a complete gun for coating. What is included in the price?

All disassembly, metal prep (for a blasted finish i.e. matte or satin), fixturing, coating, defixturing, reassembly and test fire. Any polishing is charged an extra $60 per hour.

I am sending in a parts only job. What items should and should not be included?

Any tempered steel like springs and roll pins should NOT be included. Any solid steel parts you desire can be coated right down to the smallest pins and screws.

I am sending in a complete gun for coating. Should I send the grips/stock?

Include the COMPLETE gun unless you are not interested in a test fire before it is returned. Guns without grip panels or missing any parts will NOT be test fired. We will however do a thorough functions check at the bench before it ships.

Should my gun be cleaned before sending it in?

Yes if possible. There is an extra charge if we have to clean your gun prior to prep work.

Are the coatings warranted or guaranteed?

Ionbond does not warrant their coatings to the end user. They will however work with us to make sure all of our customers are satisfied when they receive their firearm. For this reason we are able to offer a satisfaction guarantee on your initial purchase. These issues are handled on an individual case by case basis. If there is a problem with your coating job, please contact us at 336-596-0045.

Shipping

Do I have to go through another FFL or can I just mail my gun (serial numbered frame, receiver etc) directly to you?

Federal law requires that firearms be sent through a contract carrier (Fedex, UPS, DHL etc) and not USPS for non licensee to FFL shipments. This means abiding by the contract carrier's regulations concerning firearm shipments. For certain carriers this means using next day air which can be quite expensive. Also remember that we are required to use the same method to return the gun (contract carrier for a FFL to non licensee shipment). If you choose this route, the choice of carrier is totally up to you.

However if an FFL licensee is used (FFL to FFL shipment), then the gun can go through USPS which is generally less expensive. We always recommend shipping through an FFL but it's totally up to you, the customer.

I absolutely can mail your gun directly to you. Just remember that federal law requires that it be sent through a contract carrier (Fedex, UPS, DHL etc) and not USPS unless you are an FFL. This means abiding by the contract carrier's regulations concerning firearm shipments. Sometimes this means using next day air which can be a bit expensive. However if an FFL is used (FFL to FFL shipment), then the gun can go through USPS which is generally less expensive. I always reccommend shipping through an FFL but it's totally up to you, the customer.

Pricing

What is the difference between complete pricing and parts only pricing?

Complete pricing is for customers sending in the complete gun and includes all disassembly, metal prep (for a blasted finish i.e. matte or satin), fixturing, coating, defixturing, reassembly and test fire.
Parts only pricing is for customers who want to handle their own dis/reassembly and send in only the individual parts to be coated. This pricing includes metal prep (for a blasted finish i.e. matte or satin), fixturing, coating, defixturing.

Do you have a dealer pricing structure and how do I qualify?

Yes. Our dealer pricing is based on level of prep. That means that the coating job is done on a prepped parts only basis. If you are interested then here's the procedure.
Every part to be coated must be bead blasted to make sure ALL contaminants (especially accumulated crud in cracks and crevices) are removed. Then simply put, finish the individual parts any way you choose. Parts should then be coated in a SILICONE FREE corrosion preventative before shipping. Call or email for further details.

Care and maintenance

How do I care for the new coating on my gun?

PVD coatings are very porous and benefit greatly from being oiled regularly. We recommend frequent lubrication of moving parts and wipe down of external surfaces with a quality gun oil. My personal choice for use on PVD type coatings is Kano Kroil.

Does ionbond PVD have a cure time?

No. Ionbond PVD coatings do not require a cure time like conventional spray paints such as CeraKote.

 Payment

Do you require payment up front for coating jobs?

No. In fact I would rather invoice after the job is complete as I can be more thorough.
